Why Battery Replacement Is a Good Idea For Your iPhone

Finally, many owners of iPhones replace their phone because, after a year or so, the battery holds less charge between full charge and the device dying, or the phone slows and issues pop up with warnings about performance in the Settings app.

Apple offers battery servicing in its stores and through qualified third-party replacement providers.

Cost

And replacement iPhone batteries cost only a fraction of the phones themselves, are typically easy to perform with authorised service provider, and do not affect your warranty.

Another is if your phone starts taking longer to charge than it used to. If plugging in for two hours means your phone is less than ready to go, its life may be over.

Apple makes it extremely obvious when it has become the right time to replace your battery, allowing you – if you so choose – to check its maximum capacity routinely in Settings. Observe that number in the chart third from the left, under the heading (surprise!) Maximum capacity. Check it. If your number is lower than 80 per cent, please replace immediately – it costs Apple $89 to replace batteries out of warranty (meaning for phones younger than the iPhone 14).

Warranty

All Apple iPhones include a one-year limited warranty and up to two years of free repairs or replacements due to what the company calls ‘defects’ in materials and workmanship. As part of this limited warranty, Apple will replace a degraded battery, free of charge, if its capacity is less than 80 per cent of its original specifications.

The fact that people’s lithium-ion batteries degrade at all is due to the fact that they are a consumable, which means they are designed to eventually stop working, losing their ability to perform as originally intended. This downturn does not count against their quality. It reflects their fate of being consumables.

Because many owners would rather extend device life than shell out for a new phone, it is now possible to get a battery replacement at your local shop armed with nothing more than a common screwdriver and inexpensive, third-party components. However, water-wicking tape might not be sufficient to keep your iPhone bone dry if you want to do the swap yourself. In that case, it might be time to call in an expert.

If you take your iPhone into an Apple store or authorised repair provider for a battery replacement, they will advise you to back it up first because the phone will be wiped during the repair. This could mean that you lose data.

Third-Party Replacement

Apple has previously refused repair to iPhones with third-party batteries, but it is changing the policy out of the kindness of its heart: ‘Stop serving pettiness’ says an internal document obtained by MacRumors, which indicates that the new policy came from Apple’s SVP of Retail and People Deirdre O’Brien. Genius Bar and Apple Authorized Service Providers will now service those with third-party batteries at ‘standard out-of-warranty prices’: ‘Some third-party batteries can’t be serviced due to additional battery tabs or excessive adhesive that make removal impossible,’ explains the new policy.

Third parties aren’t always trustworthy, and replacement parts ordered from third-party sources – which might include used batteries – could cause more problems with your iPhone, like sudden shutdowns, boot loops or them not charging at all. That’s why it’s absolutely essential to get a back-door battery from a reputable third-party company, like iCracked, where your battery is replaced and mended twice over by trained and vetted technicians. While not as cheap as Apple’s $29 deal – about half the price, in fact, as I discovered – you can be sure you won’t be panicking or worried that your iPhone is going to randomly shut down or fail irrevocably when using it. Just make sure you are backing up all your data first.

How to Know if Your Battery Has Been Replaced

Rechargeable batteries have a limited lifetime that by nature will deteriorate over time and will one day need replacing. Batteries should never be replaced except by certified technicians using genuine parts provided by Apple. Use of nongenuine replacement parts could compromise performance or even result in safety issues.

One signal is a noticeable decrease in performance or lifespan, or if the lifespan suddenly shortens along with a rapid increase in power usage and displayed changes in battery health percentage found within the settings.

Find a manufacturing date sticker on the outside of the battery case – usually it’s a circular sticker, and the system is the same as your iPhone purchase date stickers (so, a sticker saying ‘1-02’ means January 2022). Check the voltage with a voltmeter – anything over 12.6 volts is healthy, while anything less is going to need to be replaced sooner than later.
